A&M-Kingsville national Spanish honor society chapter earns top honors

By Adriana Garza Texas A&M-Kingsville

The Texas A&M University-Kingsville chapter of Sigma Delta Pi—the National Collegiate Hispanic Honor Society— has been selected as one of 10 national Honor Chapters.

The A&M-Kingsville Lambda Gamma chapter was selected from 575 national chapters based on its outstanding activities during 2009-2010.

In May, Sigma Delta Pi chapter adviser Marco Ìñiguez submitted a report detailing the chapter’s projects, which included a diverse series of activities, including sponsoring a traditional Christmas Posada, organizing their bi-annual Sigma Delta Pi Student Academic Symposium and other cultural activities.

Based on that report the A&M-Kingsville chapter was selected by a National Executive Committee as one of only 10 chapters recognized annually as Honor Chapters.

According to the national Sigma Delta Pi organization, Honor Chapter recognition is based upon the caliber of chapter projects that reflect the Sigma Delta Pi mission of honoring excellence in the study of the Spanish language, contributing to cultural understanding and upholding the goals of the society.

Ìñiguez said the organization seeks to promote both the cultural and academic aspects the honor society represents.

“We try to create a cadre of activities that provide opportunities for our students,” Ìñiguez said.

Dr. Susan Roberson, chair of the Department of Language and Literature, said with 15 active members, the A&M-Kingsville chapter is most deserving of the honor.

“It is a real honor and indicative of the active Spanish program we have here at A&M-Kingsville,” Roberson said. “Our students are involved in these extracurricular activities and they’ve made a nice community of students among themselves. They really have a lot of pride in what they do.”
