KHDDA sets Saturday, Oct. 9, for the 3rd annual Downtown Artwalk and Music Festival

The third annual Downtown Artwalk and Music Festival will be held Saturday, Oct. 9, from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. in the 200 and 300 blocks of East Kleberg Avenue.

The streets will be blocked off and parking will be available next to Wilson’s True Value in the King Ranch Saddle Shop parking lot or in other designated areas on Yoakum Street and Seventh Street.

The Downtown Artwalk and Music Festival will feature the work of various local artists, live musicians, street performers, food and drink vendors and children’s activities.

Entry to the daytime events is free to the public.

Piecing artist Nathan Nordstrom of Austin will be featured. Nordstrom, a k.a, Sloke, began “piecing” in 1990. In 1995, he cofounded the No Boundaries Krew, which was influential in putting Austin graffiti art on the map. Works and exhibits include the Austin Musuem of Art, the Arthouse, and Gallery Lombardi. Commissioned murals have appeared in local news and magazines throughout the years.

Artwalk will also feature the local art organization, Playhouse of Design, along with art work from Texas A&M University-Kingsville, H.M. King High and area high school artists. A Chalk Walk competition will be held for children and adults of all ages, and there will be a Kid’s Corner center. There will be dance performances throughout the day as well as music by the Cuveralls, Phillip Thomas, Mariachi Celestial, a wine and beer tasting.

Popular Texas country singer Roger Creager will perform from 7 to 9 p.m.

Creager is a native of Corpus Christi and attracts a following of all ages, who travel the distance to listen to this band.

Individuals and organizations are invited to help with Artwalk as volunteers, vendors, and sponsors in order to make the event an even bigger success than last year.

The funds raised from the Artwalk and Music Festival will go directly to improving the historic downtown area with new benches, paint, flowers and more.

Organizers also intend to contribute to high school and university art departments in order to help students who are studying the arts.
