Sports bar killing nets a third arrest
Bobby Ortega The Kingsville Police Department arrested a third suspect on Wednesday in connection with the stabbing death of Matthew Garcia.
Bobby Ortega, 19, was arrested in the 200 block of West Santa Gertrudis Avenue without incident.
He is currently in the Kleberg County Jail on a charge of murder, a first degree felony.
Two other individuals, Daniel Gonzales, 26, and Sophia Campos, 26, both of Kingsville, are still being held in the Kleberg County Jail on Murder and Aggravated Assault charges.
Garcia, 20, of Kingsville, died at Christus Spohn Hospital Kleberg early Sunday morning after being repeatedly stabbed at Club Inc. inside of Rax Sports Bar.
Two other victims, his brother Jason Garcia, 22, of Kingsville, and Ernesto Garza, 30, of Bishop, were also stabbed and treated at area hospitals.
Visitation and a prayer service were held Wednesday and Thursday for Garcia. Burial followed Thursday in Falfurrias.
King’s Way Family Church Pastor Edwin Cann spoke to the crowd of well over 100 people of all ages at the prayer service.
“Today I want to honor Matthew and all the lives he touched,” he said. “Out of all the funerals I have done, I have never seen so many young people all together; so, evidently Matthew touched your life.”
Pastor Cann recalled Garcia going to the church at a young age and shared some thoughts with the audience, many of whom were in tears.
“We don’t expect someone to die at such a young age, but so many good things can be said about Matthew,” Pastor Cann said. “He was a very respectful young man; he loved sports, loved his friends, and of course, he made some good decisions, and he also made some bad decisions.” Garcia’s family was selling memorial t-shirts to raise money for expenses and other benefits have also taken place throughout the week for the family.
Following a mandatory seven-day suspension and closure of Rax Sports Bar last Sunday, as regulated by the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission anytime there is a criminal investigation into a shooting, stabbing, or murder on the licensed premises, the establishment will re-open on Monday.
TABC officials explained that the police criminal investigation takes priority and their investigation into the future licensing issues will take place at a later date.
