Diamond Angels bring home seventh place tourney finish

Meet the Diamond Angels 12U softball team. Meet the Diamond Angels 12U softball team. The Diamond Angels softball team competed in the USFA World Series that was held in Panama City Beach, Fla., during the month of July.

There were 126 total teams in the 12U division in which the girls competed.

Some of the states that were represented were Texas, Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee, Arkansas, Indiana, Louisiana, Ohio, Illinois, Kentucky, and a team from Canada.

The overall record for the tournament was 10 wins and 2 losses. One of the losses was to the eventual champion, the Georgia TANEL Bandits. The girls finished tied for seventh place in the tourney getting beat by the Tennessee Lady JAXX late Saturday afternoon.

“The pitching staff of KJ Emmons, Kayla Oliveira, and Celeste Castillo only yielded 31 runs through twelve games. It was a stellar pitching performance but even better defensive plays that kept the girls in the winner’s bracket. There were many superb players made by the outfield group of Makahyla Sandoval, Sierra De Los Santos and Victoria Miller that stopped the possibility of big innings from the other team. The instinctive base running and bases stolen by Jenna Perez and Kristen Gonzalez allowed and led to some key runs to be scored throughout the tournament. Of course through these close victories there were some big hits that led to the victories by Amanda De La Garza and Kayla Benavides. Both had key hits in the come from behind win over the Texas Force from the Metroplex area in which the Diamond Angels scored four runs in their last at bat to beat them 6 to 4. The girls competed at a very high level from the opening pitch and fought hard until the very end of the last game,” Head Coach Mike Gonzalez said.

The Diamond Angels have played in 21 tournaments since May 2009 and have accumulated nine championships, four second place awards, two fourth place finishes, and a fifth place finish in one of the most prestigious tournaments in the state, The Texas Bombers Shootout.

The overall record for this group of girls is 101 wins, 21 losses and 1 tie.

“It has been an amazing year for this group and has been achieved through our motto of: “success only precedes work in the dictionary,” said Gonzalez.
