Big welcome expected for A&M-Kingsville students

Volunteers representing the administration, faculty, staff and student body of Texas A&M University-Kingsville will be out in full force to help during residence hall Move-in Day Monday.

They will greet the students and help them move into their new residence hall rooms.

Even with the new 600-bed, year-old University Village, the residence halls are full to capacity again this year. Approximately 500 student athletes and band members are already living on campus, as their activities begin before classes start Wednesday. Residence life officials expect nearly 1,600 students to move in Monday.

Many volunteers have signed up to help, including members of the senior staff.

Members of the Javelina football team will be working between 9 and 11 a.m., probably the busiest time during the day, as students try to get their cars unloaded before the temperatures rise.

Other volunteers include members of several Greek organizations and employees of the university’s physical plant staff.

The movers will be working in two-hour shifts from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The staging area for volunteers will be in front of the Turner Bishop Cafeteria located at 1210 W. Santa Gertrudis Avenue between Retama Drive and Seale Avenue.

This is the 10th year volunteers have been recruited to assist new students in moving their personal belongings into their rooms.

They can be found carrying things like computers, clothes, pillows and the occasional teddy bear.

Move-in Day starts the Javelina Welcome, a week of backto back activities geared to help university students make new friends and get ready for the new school year.
