Oscar Gonzalez gets title shot
JUST THE TWO OF US: San Antonio Fighter Jerrone Lockette (left) and Kingsville’s Oscar Gonzalez will face each other again at ‘South Texas Young Guns III: Unfinished Business’ (September 11 at J.K. Northway) with the Texas State Welterweight Title on the line. Gonzales won the first get together Lockette - during STYG II back in May - by split decision.
For the second time in a row, Kingsville’s Oscar Gonzalez (6-2-1) and San Antonio fighter Jerrone Lockette (4-17-2) with touch gloves and headline ‘South Texas Young Guns III: Unfinished Business’. Only this time the Texas State Welterweight Title will be on the line. The rematch will be the feature fight of STYG III which will be held on September 11 at J.K. Northway Coliseum.
Lockette and Gonzalez first traded punches during STYG II on May 15; Gonzalez won their six round fight by split decision.
Also noteworthy, this will be the second time that the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation of Combative Sports is granting a state title match to Promoter and Trainer Jaime Cantu.
“It’s an honor that these fighter who have started off and stayed with us (Team Solid Knockout) have been able to prove to the Texas Boxing Commission that they are worthy of fighting for the state title,” Cantu said. “It is my goal that any and every member of Team Solid Knockout will eventually fight for the Texas State Title in their careers and that they can go on to bigger and better things like Homer Fonseca did.”
With the state belt on the line this time, Cantu went on, Gonzalez needs to leave nothing to chance against Lockette.
“What Oscar needs to do is leave no doubt by knocking Lockette out, but if that does not happen then Oscar just needs to stay busy and attack Jerrone so he can win with a dominant performance,” Cantu said. “Jerrone is a class act and we are glad to have him back on the card, he thinks he got robbed in his first fight with Oscar because one judge gave him the win. Lockette understands he is coming into a home town crowd so he also needs to stay busy in order to earn the win.”
Cantu also mentioned that his previous two promotions have allowed him to get his foot in the door with certain brass.
“On the business side, our goal is to sell out J.K. Northway,” Cantu said. “On the professional boxing side, our goal is to bring a world title fight, or television fight, to Kingsville and those topics are already in discussion. We’re already talking to people who are key to bringing either a title fight or a televised match to Kingsville but they ultimately want to see the crowd numbers at J.K. up.”
Local fighter Homer Fonseca closed the show at the first STYG, back in September 2009, by winning the Texas State Heavyweight Title through an eight round unanimous decision against Austin fighter Fred Gatica. Earlier this month, Fonseca challenged Laredo’s Hector Ferreyro for the International Boxing Council World Title. But Ferreyro retained the title through a highly questionable majority decision which left Team Fonseca shaking their heads.
“Homer took a week off after the disappointing loss, or robbery, in Laredo but his manager Jose Reyes is working hard to get a rematch with Hector Ferreyro, even though the champ does not want to give Homer a rematch,” Cantu said. “We’re asking the IBC to mandate a rematch, but Homer right now will take on all comers at this point.”
Not allowed to fight professionally for a certain time period because of his recent title fight, Fonseca could still see some type of action at STYG III.
“Homer’s back in the gym, getting back into condition and if everything works out, he will be fighting in an exhibition on September 11,” Cantu said. “Because of the number of rounds he fought in Laredo (12), Homer is suspended for 36 days from fighting a real professional match but we are trying to get a waiver that would allow him to fight in a three round exhibition.”
Fonseca’s possible opponent right now is San Angelo fighter Osvaldo Martinez.
Also fighting at STYG III are: Isaac Guzman (2-1, San Diego) versus Salvador Roa (2-1, Austin) four round middleweight match; Solomon Mungia (1-0, Ben Bolt) versus Ignacio Lopez (pro debut, South Texas Valley) four round welterweight fight; Gregory Gutierrez (pro debut, Robstown) versus Gino Hernandez (0-2, Edinburg) four round light welterweight match.
Making his pro debut, against an opponent yet to be determined, is Welterweight Omar Rojas who is a 2010 graduate from H.M. King High School.
