Academy and H.M. King hit the road for Week Zero

By Rey Sifuentes Jr.

BRAHMAS

H.M. King High School’s varsity football team scrimmaged Laredo Cigarroa on Friday.

“I thought our players were a little more aggressive and we were more physical with Laredo which is something we were really looking for,” Wilcox said. “We still have a lot of things that need to be fixed, tons of them, but we saw a lot of improvement and it was good for our kids to get a little taste of doing things right. Overall I was pleased with our effort, that was the biggest thing, we played harder and were in better shape compared to our first scrimmage a week ago.”

H.M. King loads the busses and visits Beeville at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.

“They are very big and physical up front, their offensive and defensive lines are very big and physical,” Wilcox said. “We are going to have to be able to match that because their coach has been there for two years and has his program in place and Beeville is going to run a lot of things, on both offense and defense, that we will repeatedly see from other teams this season. Our biggest match up problem is going to be our size because we are not very big so we have to be more physical with people that are bigger than us.”

LIONS

Academy competed in a tri-scrimmage against host Kennedy and Falls City on Thursday.

“The scrimmage went pretty well against two pretty good teams,” Head Coach Wally Moon said. “We pretty much held our own against both of them. It wasn’t quite as hot as the weather was during our previous scrimmage a week ago and that always helps.”

The Lions’ defensive performance on Thursday was an augmentation from their previous outing.

“Our defensive front played pretty well and our secondary played much better than our first scrimmage a week ago,” Moon said. “Offensively, we did not move the ball quite as well but we were missing three of our skill position players due to a family engagement, illness and an injury. But our overall effort was good, the kids got after their opponents and I feel we made improvements in our overall energy.”

The Lions begin their nondistrict schedule at 7:30 p.m. on Friday against Agua Dulce.

“They are going to run some plays out of both the I-Formation and the Spread,” Moon said. “They look like the typical Agua Dulce kids that are tough and will get after you, so what we have to be able to do is control the defensive and offensive line. If we do that then I think our chances of winning the game are pretty good.”

Moon said a ‘w’ this season is not a farfetched concept.

“I could be either overly optimistic or overly pessimistic, however anyone wants to look at it,” Moon said, “but if we do not win a game this year, I will be greatly surprised.”
