Former District 32-2A foes Bishop and Riviera- Kaufer High School will commence their non-district football season by meeting in Bishop at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Both teams were sent to separate divisions when the 2A ranks were divided up through a statewide district realignment by the University Interscholastic League in February. Kaufer now occupies District 16-2A Division II and Bishop resides in District 16-2A Division I.
SEAHAWKS
Riviera-Kaufer High School’s varsity football team hosted a tri-scrimmage against Bruni and Benavides on Friday.
“It was a good scrimmage for us whose main purpose was in improving our kids’ conditioning,” Head Coach Perry Graves said. “We were on the field all night long against Bruni and Benavides and we kept up with both teams’ first and second units. Our kids gave it their all.”

Kaufer’s forceful effort on the field was one big upgrade from the previous week.
“We saw more intensity from the boys, better execution on their blocks and the ball throwing also improved tremendously,” Graves said.
The water-birds are now getting ready to face the new look Badgers.
“Against Bishop, we are going to have to stick to our game plan,” Graves said. “Bishop is running a new offense this year which resembles Georgia Tech’s Option playbook and they are spreading it out. They have lots of talented kids, are a good ball club and I think they’re excited to play us as we are; any time Bishop and Riviera play each other - in no matter what - it is going to be a good game.”
BADGERS
Bishop High School’s varsity football team hosted a tri-scrimmage between Ben Bolt and Woodsboro on Friday.
“We saw some good things but also saw some things we still need improvement in,” Head Coach George Luna said. “We could have done a lot better.”
Luna said his offensive unit still needs tweaking.
“Offensively, I think we stayed at par,” Luna said. “We definitely need improvement with the communication of our offensive line. We need to make sure our offensive linemen get their blocking schemes down.”
Bishop’s defensive unit, on the other hand, raced all around the field.
“Defensively, we looked very strong which is a big jump from our first scrimmage last week,” Luna said. “We had lots of people flying to the ball.”
The Badgers are expecting the same old throw down against the Seahawks on Friday.
“Riviera is going to be tough, I have seen them improve a lot in the last two years,” Luna said. “To beat them we are going to have to play flawless, we can’t have any mental mistakes or turnovers. Defensively, we have to stop their offense which has a good quarterback, a very good running back and a strong offensive line.”
