Bishop Consolidated Independent School District has six fresh faces amongst its coaching staff this year. New to the BHS coaching staff are Scott Sharp (junior high boys basketball and track), Cassie Hinojosa (junior varsity volleyball and junior high girls basketball), Julia Campos (high school volleyball and softball), Monica Harris (junior high girls basketball), Frank Lopez (junior high football, freshman basketball and baseball) and Joe Morales (junior high football and freshman softball).

“Three of our new coaches are straight out of college and the other three have experience,” BCISD Athletic Director George Luna said.

Luna’s overall staff has increased by three coaches, from last year’s numbers, which helps spread the athletic load.

“Having more coaches on staff is very valuable because I do not want to put many coaches in a position where they each have to coach too many sports because that takes away from what they do academically,” Luna said. “Bishop is known for its athletics but having a coach do two or more sports, for example, can get them burnt out.”

Bishop’s coaches have certainly helped the district succeed academically in recent years.

“They have done an excellent job, our TAKS scores were real high last year and this district was almost exemplary,” Luna said. “That tells us that not only do we have great coaches but also great teachers that are also coaches and that is very important in having a good program overall.”

As Bishop’s new athletic director, Luna is keeping his feet on the ground when it comes to his expectations for this school year.

“In football, we have a tough pre-district schedule and if we go .500 in district then I think we have a real chance of making the playoffs,” Luna said. “Overall, my goal has always been to win the U.I.L. Texas Cup, which is awarded to a school for its overall athletic performance in every sport during a given year. I know we had 14 out of our 16 teams make the playoffs last year.”

One thing that has Luna smiling this season is the recent opening of the new Bishop High School campus.

“Our new facilities are second to none, they’re excellent,” Luna said. “A facility like this also gives you more pride in your job here at Bishop CISD because now you are working with a facility that is more up to date.”

The new campus is a definite crown jewel.

“We probably have the prettiest facilities as far as small schools,” Luna said. “That attracts a lot of people because it also attracts a lot of students. The more students we get, the more athletes we can get out of that.”
