Seahawks remain unbeaten

By Rey Sifuentes Jr.

Riviera-Kaufer High School’s varsity football team ran all over their home field and bumped up their season record to 2-0 after shutting out Woodsboro 28-0 this past Friday.

Adrian Caballero scored on runs of 18 and two yards while gaining 178 total. Heston Van Fleet scored on a two-yard quarterback sneak. Gilbert Arrollo ran the ball for a score from seven yards out.

The Seahawks stuck to their running game as falling rain hampered passing the ball.

“We didn’t throw the ball nearly as good as I wanted to but the rain had a lot to do with that,” Head Coach Perry Graves said. “Our running game, though, went pretty good. Adrian gained well over a hundred yards for the second week in a row and we were very happy about that.”

The water-birds have developed a potent offense which can attack opponents through different methods.

“We have a very balanced offensive attack,” Graves said. “We have a trigger guy who can throw the ball extremely well and some very good receivers. Other teams cannot just concentrate on one person, but instead have to spread out and keep an eye on everyone which can leave someone open.”

Kaufer’s young offensive blockers have more than held their own thus far this season.

“We have a young offensive line this season, three of our blockers are sophomores,” Graves said. “We also have a junior and senior up front but all of the linemen on offense are busting their tails and getting after it.”

Graves also offered plenty of kudos to his defensive unit.

“Anytime you pitch a shutout, you’re obviously doing something right,” Graves said. “Ceasar Gomez ended up with 16 tackles (8 solo) so he is doing a great job. Chris Foster picked off a Woodsboro pass and returned it 35 yards which really set up our first touchdown.”

The Seahawks visit Natalia at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.

“Natalia’s new head coach is doing an unbelievably good job,” Graves said. “They run a spread offense, kind of like the type we do, which is very balanced. We are just going to have to play base defense and cover them as best we can on the field because Natalia can run and throw the ball; defensively they run a Spread-6 formation and they’ll come get you so it is going to be a tough battle.”
