Bishop CISD winding up work on new tennis courts
Construction on Bishop High School’s new tennis courts should be completed by Monday, the project’s architect said last week.
Todd Brendalen, an architect and vice president of Lamarr Womack and Associates, updated the Bishop Consolidated School District Board of Trustees on the project’s progress, along with other construction projects, at the board’s Jan. 30 meeting.
Brendalen said the tennis courts were substantially completed as of Jan. 18, with three courts awaiting the installation of windscreens. Bishop students have already been using the five other completed tennis courts, he said.
Brendalen said the facility has eight regulation U. S. Tennis Association-certified tennis courts. Three of the USTA certified courts have been striped for children under 10 years of age or under to play tennis.
The facility includes restrooms, a concession building and storage for tennis equipment. The public will be able to use the front five courts at night and on weekends due to the use of automated timers to control the courts’ lighting system.
The main courts provide shade for players and spectators, Brendalen said.
The tennis courts project began in September after the demolition of the junior high school. The project was part of the district’s $24 million capital improvement program, which was approved by voters in 2007. The bond projects also included the construction a new high school and track and athletic improvements.
Construction of the tennis courts cost $1.6 million.
