- Gabe (later nicknamed GMC) of Augusta, KS, passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 22, 2020. Gabe was born on Jan. 27, 1978 in Kingsville, TX and raised the majority of his life in Bishop, TX (Go Badgers!). He moved to Kingsville in his late teens with his family and graduated from H.M. King High School (Vamos ai Brahmas) in 1996. Gabe loved Jesus. Although he had his ups and downs over the years with his relationship with Jesus, he prayed daily, talked to his children about spiritual things, and encouraged them to follow Jesus and never stray from His path, always wanted them in church on Sunday and youth group Wednesday nights. He is resting in the arms of Jesus now. Gabe was a program provider at El Dorado Correctional Facility. For years he taught classes to the residents there. He really valued what he did, saw changes in men that he didn’t know was possible. He felt like he was making a difference with the guys he taught and saw them as men who had made some bad choices, but had the ability to change and make themselves better. He valued the friendships he made with co-workers there, he talked about them often, and always had a funny story to tell about someone. He had just received a promotion to unit team manager and was excited about this new position. Gabe is survived by his loving wife of 19 years, Ruth (Martin) Morales and children, Elly and William, all of Augusta, KS; his mother, Theresa Sanchez Morales of Corpus Christi TX; siblings, Maria Theresa Hernandez of Bishop TX, Mario A. Morales and his wife Kristen of Seekonk MA, Susie Satsky and her husband Eric of Flour Bluff TX; and six nieces and nephews, (Gabriela Marie, Molly Elizabeth, Brendan Miguel, Lauren Katherine, Ethan Joseph and Jacob Richard). He is preceded in death by his father, Mario A. Morales Sr. Gabe loved Ruth, Elly and William with all of his heart. He was particularly proud of his kids’ passion to learn, and their competitiveness, athleticism and faith. Sports provided him with many opportunities and taught him multiple life lessons. He would light up every time he watched Elly and William compete. He lived for all of their game or tournament weekends, and he hated (yes, hated), when a weekend rolled around and there were no games on the schedule. (Admit it, although you look forward to a relaxing weekend, there is nothing better than being at the field.) He wasn’t a Pit Master but that did not stop him from enjoying his grill time, which is a passion he picked up from dad. He even went so far as to make his own cinderblock outdoor grill (Mexican ingenuity at its finest!). He treasured his axe and chainsaw, and he would use them anytime and on anything he could. If you think about it, it is lucky we did not lose him sooner due to some crazy Jackass-type movie accident. The machismo in him kept him from outwardly cozying up to the family dogs, Zeus and Ming, but we all know it was an act because deep down he was a big softy. Zeus would just give him the stink-eye and Ming would cozy up close and lay next to him on the couch or floor. It wouldn’t be right if we didn’t share a few fun facts about Gabe with all of you. He loved to watch the 49’ers (not sure where this came from) and the Texans (we guess he forgot the Oilers moved to Tennessee and became the Titans). He also loved playing video games although we hope he upgraded from the ColecoVision console we had growing up. His favorite food was Chicken Fried Steak, and according to him the best was the Saddle Blanket at a restaurant in Riviera. He loved chicken fried steak so much that mom once got him to eat breaded liver after telling him it was chicken fried steak. We do not recall if he ever figured out why we were laughing. A close second were the hamburgers from Maverick Market off Highway 77 Bypass in Bishop. Mom would go out of her way to get him a couple for dinner after practice. As a youngster, he was known to make some hilarious comments at unusual times. For example, one night at Red Lobster the waitress took our order and he made sure to tell her to hurry up because he had not eaten in 3 days. Another time at H-E-B in Kingsville when he was 5 or 6, he walked up to a Texas A&I football player who was in front of us, slapped him on the butt and when the player looked down at him, he simply stated… What’s happening brother? (instant mental picture). Luckily the player stuck out his hand and gave him “five.” He had a love for football so great that he dreamed of making it big on the football field. His desire to play took him to Kansas where he played at two small colleges – Bethel and Tabor. Although he didn’t get his degree the first go around, he continued to work at it and eventually earned his bachelor’s from Wichita State University. Earning his degree later in life was an accomplishment he was very proud of. And we were too bro! And best of all, his football journey helped him find Ruth, who is adored and loved by the Morales family. Gabe was one-of-a-kind, and we were fortunate to call him husband, dad, son and brother. Graveside Service will be on Tuesday, Dec. 29, at 2 p.m. at Elmwood Cemetery in Augusta, KS. The family wishes Memorial Contributions be made to the Augusta Caring Center, left in care of the Dunsford Funeral Home. (1)
