The Brush Country Court Appointed Special Advocates will host its fourth annual “Glow the Distance” 5K run at Dick Kleberg Park next Saturday to raise awareness and provide funding for the organization.

“It’s an event that we host to help promote family unity,” Nicole Ortegon, outreach director for Brush Country CASA, said. “We want to give the citizens of Kingsville the chance to bond with their family as well as help promote our program.”

The event is Brush Country CASA’s largest fundraiser of the year, with proceeds going to help the organization as it markets and trains its volunteers. Those individuals serve as advocates for abused and neglected children within the court system in Kleberg, Jim Wells, Brooks, Kenedy and Duval counties.

Ortegon said the run has been a success in past years for Brush Country CASA, and they are looking forward to another successful event.

In the “Glow the Distance” 5K, runners will pass through “color stations” throughout the course where they will be doused with colorful “glow powder.”

“And we’ll have black lights (set up) so they’ll glow as they run,” Ortegon said.

The event features separate races, with a one-mile run for children and the full 5K, about 3.1 miles, for adults.

“But kids can decide if they want to run in the 5K or the kids’ mile,” Ortegon said.

Medals are awarded to the first through third place runners in different age groups and genders, along with trophies for the overall male and female runners.

V-Fit Productions will provide electronically chipped bibs for participants for professional timing and results.

Early registration is $12 for children and $35 for adults. On the day of the event, the cost will be $15 for children and $40 for adults. Special rates for groups of 10 or more are also available on request.

Swag bags will be available for registrants on a first come, first-served basis.

The “Glow the Distance” 5K will begin at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 24 at Dick Kleberg Park in Kingsville.
