Juneteenth was celebrated this past weekend on Saturday, June 18, at Thompson Park in Kingsville. The Juneteenth event, which was hosted by the City of Kingsville Parks and Recreation Department, included kids and family activities, plenty of food, and the first annual basketball tournament. This event being held at Thompson Park started with an idea for the park to bring back event. The vision came from individuals who went to play there during the 80s and 90s and envisioned the park to be used for community events.
“I feel overwhelmed that everyone came to be a part of this--and the young people mostly--but there were people who have been working to prepare this event all week,” event coordinator Diane Beecham said. “I am looking forward to togetherness and everyone realizing why we are here and celebrate Juneteenth.”
