UPDATE (1:32 p.m.) Following the publication of the original story, Chief Torres provided an update in which he said Perez is in critical condition in the hospital.

ORIGINAL POST (12:24 p.m.) A local man is in stable condition after he was allegedly shot in the head while driving last night.

Kingsville Police Chief Ricardo Torres said at about 12:30 a.m. Monday, 26-year-old Rolando Perez was allegedly shot in the head while driving his vehicle in the 800 block of E. Alice Avenue.

“I’m not even certain why it occurred just yet,” Torres said. “We’re still in the investigative portion (of this case).”

Torres said a passenger in the vehicle took over driving and transported Perez to an apartment complex located in the 700 block of W. Kenedy Avenue, where officers responded to the call.

“The officers quickly provided first aid and EMS stabilized him,” Torres said.

Perez was taken by an emergency vehicle to Christus Spohn Hospital Kleberg and transported via HALO flight to a hospital in Corpus Christi, where Torres said he is currently in stable condition.

Torres said the incident is still under investigation, and no arrests have been made as of noon Monday.
