Kleberg County commissioners on Monday voted unanimously in a special emergency meeting to issue a disaster declaration meant to get ahead of the spread of the novel coronavirus making its way across the United States.
“I don’t want to cause panic in the community,” Madrid said after the vote was taken. “This is the beginning - the very beginning - of this issue, and so now is the time to be proactive.”
The disaster declaration is not the result of any confirmed cases of COVID-19, as there are none in Kleberg County or the surrounding areas as of March 16. It will allow the county to seek resources, like needed supplies or reimbursement for those items and salaries associated with prevention efforts, Madrid said.
