The Christmas season officially kicks off this Saturday with the 30th annual La Posada de Kingsville, featuring a variety of holiday activities in Downtown Kingsville.

The main attraction for Saturday’s events is the La Posada procession and the Parade of Lights starting at 6:30 p.m.

The procession will feature Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church alongside other local parishes in a reenactment of Mary and Joseph seeking shelter before the birth of Jesus.

The tradition has roots in Spain and was later spread throughout Mexico by Franciscan monks before it was brought to the United States.

La Posada will begin at the Kleberg County Courthouse and end on Third Street and Kleberg Avenue at Kingsville City Hall with a live Nativity scene.

The Parade of Lights, beginning around 7 p.m. following the La Posada procession, will celebrate education and teamwork within the community under the theme “Show us your school/Team Christmas Spirit.”

The parade will feature dozens of floats, each illuminated with hundreds to thousands of lights as they make their way along the parade route. Local high school marching bands and other organizations will also participate in the parade.

Prior to La Posada and the parade will be a Children’s Snow Day event at the Downtown Pavilion located at 261 S. Sixth St. from 10:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. Children will be able to play inside a large snow area or take a ride in an inner tube down two snow slides. Games, snacks and other Christmas-themed activities will also be available during the event.

Also before the parade, from 3-6 p.m. in the 400 block of E. Kleberg Ave. in Downtown Kingsville, will be a live music performance featuring Serjio & Ropin’ the Wind.

The festivities continue on Sunday, Dec. 8, at 10:45 a.m. at the First Baptist Church, located at 312 W. King Street, which will feature its combined youth and high school worship choirs in a concert entitled “What Kind of Throne.”

Also on Sunday, beginning at 7 p.m., will be a concert performance from the Kingsville Chorale at Texas A&M University-Kingsville’s Jones Auditorium entitled “Christmas with Rudolph and Friends.”

St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, located at 1400 Brookshire Dr., will host a procession in honor of the Virgin of Guadalupe on Wednesday, Dec. 12, starting at 5 p.m. The procession will end at the Our Lady of Good Counsel Church.

Mass will follow from 7 to 8 p.m. and will conclude with refreshments and entertainment in the Parish Hall.
