A fire inside of a local business in Downtown Kingsville caused heavy damage that did not spread to nearby structures, Kingsville Fire Department officials said last week.
The KFD responded to a building fire at “The Tanning Bar” tanning salon located at the corner of Kleberg Avenue and 7th Street just before 12:30 p.m. on Feb. 5.
Officials said the fire was difficult to find when arriving on scene, but was quickly extinguished when it was located.
The fire did not spread to any other buildings.
Interim Kingsville Fire Chief Ron Lee said in an interview Monday morning, the initial cause of the fire is still under investigation, as they continue to rule out all possibilities of the fire. But the fire did start inside of a tanning booth room, Lee said.
No injuries were reported in the fire, though the building and equipment inside suffered heavy damage, Lee said.
According to the Tanning Bar’s Facebook page, it had been in the location for about three months at the time of last week’s fire.
The fire sparked fears from residents and nearby business owners of a possible repeat of a massive blaze that destroyed several small businesses at that same corner in 2017.
The fire that year was stopped from spreading at the elevated wall belonging to the same building that caught fire on Feb. 5 – had it made it over, it’s likely several other businesses would have been destroyed in that 2017 fire.
