Two student-athletes at H.M. King High School were presented with scholarships after being named this year’s male and female athlete of the year.
Class of 2020 graduates Carina Zepeda and Gabe Garcia were each presented with big $1,000 checks by representatives from the Brahma Athletic Booster Club last Wednesday afternoon.
The students were set to receive their awards at this year’s athletic banquet, but the event was canceled due to the novel coronavirus pandemic.
Garcia graduated from H.M. King High School, Cum Laude and is a member of the National Honor Society.
He was a varsity athlete in basketball and cross country from his sophomore year to his senior year.
Garcia will attend Texas A&M University-Kingsville in the fall and study kinesiology.
“Just receiving the scholarship means a lot to me,” Garcia said. “Working hard every day, every year that I’ve played basketball and cross country. I want to shout out all my teammates for pushing me to my hardest, given all my potential and everything. I just love Brahma Nation.”
Zepeda is a cum laude graduate who was in NHS and also received a performance acknowledgment medal for academic achievement. She was the senior class president and also had perfect attendance from her first grade year all the way to her senior year.
Zepeda played varsity volleyball through all four years in high school and played varsity basketball from her sophomore year to her senior year.
She will be attending TAMUK in the fall to study biomedical science.
“I feel really honored,” Zepeda said of receiving her scholarship. “It’s been a privilege being here at H.M. all four years so, it’s really nice to get something after all this has happened.”
