The Roman Catholic Diocese of Corpus Christi announced Friday that St. Gertrude the Great Catholic School, located at 400 E. Caesar Ave. in Kingsville, will be closing its campus at the end of May.

According to a press release from the Roman Catholic Diocese of Corpus Christi, “changing demographics, declining enrollment, and growing financial challenges” contributed to the closing of the school, which has served the Kingsville community since 1952.

Fr. Joseph Lopez, pastor of St. Gertrude the Great Church, announced the closure to school parents and the community during a meeting inside the church’s parish hall on May 17.

According to the release, the Corpus Christi Diocese’s Office of Catholic Schools will be working with families to retain the school’s 60 pre-kindergarten 3 through fourth grade students.

“Representatives and administrators from the nearest Catholic School, St. Anthony in Robstown, were present (at Friday’s meeting) to schedule tours, conduct registration and to meet parents and families,” the release stated.

St. Gertrude the Great Catholic School will officially close upon the completion of the 2018-19 academic year, which ends on Friday, May 31.
