Andra Lou Hegwer Smith was born in 1943 to Alice and Andrew Hegwer. She died peacefully on May 31, 2021. She traveled extensively as a military brat with her parents and siblings Winnie and Allen. Alaska, Massachusetts, and Florida were just a few of their many stops.

She graduated from Midwestern University and married VA Smith on Dec. 28, 1969. Andra and VA lived in Kingsville, Texas where they had one daughter, Kristin Kay.

Andra proudly worked and retired from civil service, working with both the Army and Navy. She was a member of the Kingsville Women’s Club and served as President as well as the Chairman of numerous committees. Andra and VA retired to Wichita Falls and she whole heartedly enjoyed helping raise her only grandchild, Maris.

Andra was always giving of her time and talents to charity and church. She was a lifelong Lutheran who sang in the choir. She reached the pinnacle of being Lutheran when she became the “funeral lady” at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church. Those who knew Andra know she loved dogs, a good book, a crossword puzzle, watching game shows, a stiff drink, a cigarette, and a party. She was an excellent seamstress but never ran a vacuum. She was a phenomenal cook but never washed a dish. She spent many conversations correcting others - especially her siblings. Above all she was a loving and loved daughter, wife, sibling, mother and grandmother.

She is survived by her husband of 51 years Dr. VA Smith, her daughter Kristin and husband Bruce Harris, her granddaughter Margaret “Maris” Harris, sister Winnie and husband Sal Vetrano as well as brother Allen Hegwer and nephew Adam Hegwer.

The family would like to express their sincere and heartfelt appreciation to all of the Gables staff and to Hospice of Wichita Falls for their patient and tender care. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the Elijah Comfort Dog Program fund at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, 4605 Cypress Ave., Wichita Falls, Texas 76310. Condolences may be sent to VA Smith and Kristin Harris at 3002 Speedway, Wichita Falls, Texas 76308.

Services will be held on Monday June 7th at 10:30 a.m. at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, Wichita Falls, Texas.
