Mary Barbara “Bobbe” Kaufer Martin

Mary Barbara “Bobbe” Kaufer Martin departed for her heavenly home on Sunday, March 29, 2020. She was born to Saphronia “Fronie” and Leo Kaufer on Sept. 10, 1928 in Kingsville.

Bobbe was raised in Riviera, where she enjoyed her childhood with her sister, Jean Kaufer Hines. While growing up in Riviera, she attended what is now Riviera Kaufer High School, where she graduated as valedictorian of her class. Bobbe attended the University of Texas and was a member of Zeta Tau Alpha sorority. While at UT, she met Benson “Ben” L. Martin Jr. on a blind date. After graduating with a degree in business administration, she and Ben married on Jan. 14, 1950 and celebrated 70 years of marriage in January, 2020. Bobbe and Ben moved to Kingsville in 1961 where he began his medical practice. They resided in Kingsville for 57 years.

Bobbe dedicated her time to a variety of community initiatives and organizations in Kingsville. She was a lifelong member of the First United Methodist Church and served on numerous boards throughout the years. Bobbe was an active member and officer of United Methodist Women, Kingsville Woman’s Club NOW Department, Evening Garden Club, Daughters of the American Revolution and Colonial Dames. She also led community bible study for many years and volunteered in Reach to Recovery for the American Cancer Society.

Bobbe was a loving and devoted wife, mother, aunt, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend. She took pleasure in spending time with her family and friends, reading, cooking and traveling. She was also an avid bridge player and played in several bridge groups. Some of her favorite times were spent with her husband at their beach cottage and sitting on their patio enjoying the south Texas evenings. She will always be remembered for her kind heart, generous spirit, quick wit and as a faithful servant of our Lord Jesus Christ.

She was preceded in death by her parents, sister, and sons-in-law, Malcolm Hamff and Dean Jones.

Left to cherish her memory is her loving husband, Ben; her daughters, Barbara Hamff, Ellen (Bill) Risken, Sally Byrnes Jones and Fronie (Allen) Gillespie; grandchildren, Chase (Liz) Hamff, Camille (Mike) Holland, Jeanine (Brian) Birdwell, Erin (Jason) Gregory, Tamara Risken, Russell (Samantha) Byrnes, Meredith (Carson) Pfluger and Blake Byrnes; and 13 great grandchildren; nieces, Kay (Steve) Houston, Kelly (Gerald) Trlica and nephew, Dr. Jeff Hines.

A private family graveside service took place on April 2, 2020 at the Riviera Cemetery. A Memorial service will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to First United Methodist Church of Kingsville, American Cancer Society or the charity of one’s choice.
