Over the course of the last two weeks, issues arising out of the current Mexico-United States border crisis have spilled over into our area. As reported in the Kingsville Record last week, there were two serious incidents on Monday, September 20 that involved area law enforcement tracking down and capturing Mexican and Haitian immigrants.

We think this escalating crisis has been met head on by Texas Governor Jim Abbott, and we applaud him for taking action while the federal government dilly-dallies around in Washington and drags its feet in dealing with the problem. The Governor has sent hundreds and hundreds of Department of Public Safety officers to the border, and he has sent hundreds of other state employees and officials to help meet the burgeoning crisis. He has signed orders to increase funding for border security. Short of calling up the National Guard, Governor Abbott is at least trying to do something to secure the Texas border while the feds let the situation simmer and expand. While we understand the need to let freedom loving people into our country, it has to be done lawfully. We are a nation of laws, and our rules for entry must be enforced and the chaos of the border must be stopped as soon as possible.
