Two weeks ago, I left work on a Thursday afternoon to take my first vacation in almost two years. I was headed northwest to Fredericksburg to do the wine country tours and climb Enchanted Rock.

Suddenly, while driving north between Bishop and Robstown, the breaking news came over the radio like a thunderbolt: Over 10 men had been arrested as domestic terrorists for trying to kidnap the governor from my home state of Michigan, Gretchan Whitmer. I was stunned at the news, especially since I have known Gretchan from her early days in local government and state government in East Lansing and Lansing, Mich. where I worked and lived.
