Bulls fall to Pirates, now waiting on playoff matchup
The H.M. King Brahmas (2-8, 1-3) dropped their regular season finale to the Hidalgo Pirates (8-2, 3-1) tonight, 20-24.
The Brahmas started the contest with a turnover on the first drive, when Lupe Cavazos threw an interception to give the Pirates their first chance on offense.
The HMK defense was able to get the ball back when they halted the Pirates on the ensuing drive, with a turnover-on-downs.
With under thirty seconds left in the first, Lupe Cavazos ran the football into the endzone from 14-yards out to give the Bulls the lead, 7-0.
Three drives later, the Brahmas stripped the football and Mateo Rocha picked it up and returned it near midfield.
Cavazos connected with Tarance Carter for 39-yards, which set up a 12-yard rushing touchdown for Ethan Bazan.
With more than two minutes remaining in the half, the Pirates finally answered the Bulls with a 23-yard throw-and-catch for a touchdown to shrink the HMK lead to one score.
After the half, on the second play to start the third quarter, Lupe Cavazos snatched a deep ball intended for a Pirates Receiver for an interception.
After a punt, the Pirates tied the game up on the next drive with a three-yard rushing touchdown.
The score remained 14-14 until the Pirates nailed a 33-yard field goal with 8:53 remaining in the game to take the lead.
After another punt for the Brahmas on the following drive, the Pirates scored on their second rushing touchdown of the night to cushion their lead to 14-24.
One drive later, the Brahmas traveled down the field in three plays to shrink the Pirates’ lead to four, after Cavazos’ second rushing touchdown, 20-24.
The Bulls’ defense was unable to stop the Pirates‘ offense on the next drive, which sealed the win for Hidalgo.
The Brahmas were unable to obtain a playoff berth after placing fifth in District 16-4A, Division I on points.
Other area teams drop final game of season
In District 16-3A, Division I, the Bishop Badgers (1-9, 1-6) lost their final contest of the season to the Lyford Bulldogs (5-5, 5-2), 34-7.
The Santa Gertrudis Academy Lions (0-10, 0-7) were defeated in their final game by the Aransas Pass Panthers (3-7, 2-5), 30-20.
In District 16-2A, Division I, the Riviera Seahawks (2-8, 0-5) closed their season with a loss to the Ben Bolt Badgers (5-5, 1-4), 28-12.
