Bishop native Lucas Chavez is now a two-time AAU National Champion after participating in the 2019 AAU Taekwondo Nationals earlier this month.
Chavez qualified for and attended the 2019 AAU Taekwondo Nationals in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. from July 1-6 at the Broward County Convention Center.
Chavez competed in both the Olympic Sparring and the Forms competitions.
In the Forms competition, Chavez earned a bronze medal in WT Forms, one of the five categories for the event.
In Olympic Sparring, Chavez competed in the male advanced division for ages 12-14 at a weight of 134.6 and higher.
Chavez defeated Luis Rodriquez from Florida in the final matchup to win the tournament and bring home the gold medal.
Chavez was crowned the AAU National Champion in his bracket for the second time in his taekwondo career, earning his first gold in the 2013 form competition in the male novice division for ages 8-9.
“We are very proud of this accomplishment,” his mother, Melissa Chavez said.
Lucas will be a freshman this fall at Bishop High School and trains at Lumampao Martial Arts in Corpus Christi.
