Chavez takes taekwondo gold

Bishop’s Lucas Chavez has put together a successful few months in taekwondo tournaments to begin 2019. 

Lucas took the gold medal in olympic-style sparring at the Houston Open on Feb. 23.

Chavez also earned a gold medal in olympic sparring on Feb. 24 at the AAU Taekwondo District Qualifier at Butler Stadium in Houston and earned a gold medal in olympic sparring in Huntsville at the World Class Championship Round Robin in March. 

He also placed at the AAU regional qualifier in San Antonio on April 27, winning first place in sparring.

Chavez has qualified and is now headed for the AAU Taekwondo Nationals in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. on July 1-6. 

He is an eighth grade student from Bishop and is currently with Lumampao Martial Arts in Corpus Christi.
