Lady Lions take second

The Santa Gertrudis Academy Volleyball team took second place at the Freer Tournament last weekend with a 5-1 record.

The first season for Coach Thomas De Los Santos at the helm of the Santa Gertrudis Academy Volleyball team is off to good start, after taking home a second place finish in the Freer Volleyball tournament last weekend.

The Lady Lions went 5-1 on the day and De Los Santos said the tournament was only the beginning of what looks to be a promising season.

“One thing we did really well (at the tournament) was we competed,” De Los Santos said. “There’s obviously things that we need to work on. I mean, I felt we should have won the championship game, because we had some miscues that are correctable. We have always had a good program. We had opportunities to win the game, and we didn’t close it out.”

Looking forward, De Los Santos said the next two tournaments will test his team’s toughness to “see what we’re made of.”

“We’re going to the Sinton tournament on Friday, and starting off the tournament facing the host, and they have always had a good program there,” De Los Santos said. “The next week we go to Laredo in a tournament with 5A and 6A schools, and that’s just our pool. That is going to be the toughest tournament we go to and that’s going to really be a test for us.”

De Los Santos said his team has played better than he expected, so the goals for his team have changed.

“Their chemistry and work ethic is better than what I expected,” De Los Santos said. “My original goal was for us to just make the playoffs. Now? I think we have a chance to win the district. It’s a tough district, don’t get me wrong. London, Falfurrias, Bishop’s been good, Banquete, San Diego. It’s not going to be a cakewalk but I believe we can pull it off.”
