Both the Santa Gertrudis Academy Lady Lions and the Bishop Lady Badgers have advanced to the Area round in the Class 3A Volleyball playoffs after winning their matchups on Monday night.

The Lady Lions defeated the Lyford Lady Bulldogs in straight sets 25-8, 25-9, 25-12, in what was a quick match for SGA.

Annie Coufal led the offense with nine kills and also had two blocks on the night.

Kendra Williams stuffed the stat sheet with six kills, two aces, four digs and two blocks.

Nina Perez and Mia Jaramillo had 13 assists apiece, and Sierra Sandoval led the team in digs with 11.

Up next for the Lady Lions is a game against Taft tonight at 6:30 in Calallen.

The Lady Badgers sealed their bi-district title victory in five sets after defeating Santa Rosa 25-16, 16-25, 20-25, 25-17, 16-14.

The Badgers won the first set, but quickly found themselves down after losing the next two.

The Lady Badgers fought back to win two straight to take the victory, but Head Coach Sherry Cain said the match shouldn’t have gone five sets.

“I told the girls in the locker room, that (game) was a nightmare,” Cain said. “We played down to their level, and we just weren’t getting momentum. And you can’t get momentum either when you are hitting the ball out of bounds and hitting the ball into the net. We just weren’t hitting the ball for awhile there.”

Despite the play, Cain said “a win is a win” and they are focused heading into the next contest.

“More than likely we’re going to play a hundred times better against Goliad,” Cain said. “The team knows we’re going to have to play way better, and we will because we typically play to our level. I think our team played with some jitters because it was the first playoff match for a few of the girls, which played a factor. But hopefully we don’t have them on Thursday.”

The next game for the Badgers will be a game against Goliad tonight in Sinton, with a game time of 7 p.m.
