Local teams kick off district play

Basketball has officially entered district play for most teams in the area, with multiple teams in action Tuesday night.

In District 31-4A, the H.M. King Brahmas boy’s team was victorious to earn the first district win of the season over Robstown 82-36.

The Brahmas (1-1) were led by Nate Garcia’s 19 points, Gabe Garcia chipped in 13 points and Lorenzo Villarreal added 10 on the night.

The Lady Brahmas (0-4) also competed against Robstown, but lost 72-18.

Carina Zepeda led HMK in scoring with seven points and Kiara McCoy was behind her with six.

Next up is a home contest against Ingleside for both teams on Friday, the girls playing at 6:15 p.m. and the boys playing at 7:30 p.m.

In District 31-3A, both Santa Gertrudis Academy boy’s and girl’s squads came out victorious over San Diego.

The boy’s team (2-0) defeated the Vaqueros 49-44, with Kayden McClure leading the charge with 20 points including six three-pointers and Trent Wheeler had 10 points in the contest.

The Lady Lions (3-0) blew out San Diego 55-27, as Sierra Sandoval once again led the team in scoring with 21 points.

Azaria Sanchez scored 13 points and Elexis Morado had nine points for the Lady Lions in the win.

Both teams face Hebbronville at home on Friday, with the girls game first at 6:30 p.m. and the boys game to follow.

Bishop (0-1) squared off with the Banquete Bulldogs on Tuesday night, but the Badgers were unable to come out on top losing a close one, 37-35.

Adam Gonzalez scored 11 points with Brett Pena adding seven for the game.

The Badgers will face San Diego at home on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
