Riviera Eighth Grade Cross Country team

The Riviera Junior High Eighth Grade Girl’s Cross Country team brought home gold at their district meet earlier this month and are now back-to-back champions.

Sami Barker led the team by placing first at the event and was crowned the district champion. 

Abby Alegria placed fourth, Haley Shugart placed seventh, Caitlin Medlock placed eighth and Layla Cantu placed 15th to round out the competitors. 

In the division, four out of five girls finished in the top 10 to medal as individuals. 

In the seventh grade boy’s division, Eduardo Alvarez placed fifth to medal at the event. 

Branden Solomen, Aaron Ramirez and Roan Bell also competed for the seventh grade boys. 

In the seventh grade girls division, the Riviera girls took second place. 

Members of the team were Katelina Rendon, Destinee Reyes, Sienna Colin, Olivia Ramos, Eliana Arroyo, and Brooke Willmore.

Rendon captured the district championship honor in the seventh grade girls division. Reyes also medaled by coming in seventh. 

The eighth grade boys division members were Cesar Alvarez, Jacob Mendietta, Leroy Salinas, Derek Jordan, Urban Garcia, David Castillo, Landon Longoria and Walker Dobson. 

Alvarez placed fifth, Mendietta placed eighth and Salinas placed ninth at the event. They placed second in the district team standings.

“I am very proud of them and our support system and the coaches, who encourage kids to run cross country,” head coach Joey Rendon said. “Thank you to my assistant Christina Suarez, who does a great job of motivating kids.”
